Improved Safe Church training is here
The Safe Church training program has now been modified and improved.
‘We listened carefully to your feedback and worked hard to incorporate your suggestions,’ Professional Standards Manager Tim Ross said.
Importantly, Level 1 training has been updated and reduced from three sessions to two relatively brief sessions: ‘Level 1 – Induction’ and ‘Level 1 – Safeguarding’. As a result, there is no longer any further need for ‘Level 1 Refresher’ training, with the new Level 1 training effectively amounting to a refresher. Recognition of prior learning is available for comparable courses in relation to both Level 1 sessions.
A self-paced online version of the training will again be available on iLearn. The team at Australian Lutheran College are busy today amending iLearn to reflect the announced changes, with the updated modules to be ready from tomorrow, Wednesday 1 May 2024.
‘The ALC team has also been working hard to make the navigation smoother and more user-friendly,’ Tim said.
‘Further, we are now pleased to be able to offer an alternative ‘live online’ format. We have introduced this additional format to accommodate people who prefer a live training experience. Live online training will deliver the best of both worlds. Participants can attend an online training session at the scheduled time that best suits them; they will not need to wait for a trainer to visit their region or parish for a workshop. They will still be able to interact with their online trainer and have their questions answered.’
The following live online training sessions have been scheduled for Tuesday evenings during May:
- Level 1 – Induction
7.30pm to 9.00pm (AEST), Wednesday 15 May 2024 - Level 1 – Safeguarding
7.30pm to 9.00pm (AEST), Tuesday 21 May 2024 - Level 2
7.30pm to 9.00pm (AEST), Tuesday 28 May 2024
(Please note it is not intended that the live online training sessions will be exclusively scheduled at 7.30pm going forward. A mix of time slots will be considered, together with the requests of prospective participants.)

‘We are confident that the adjustments make the training more robust, effective and sustainable,’ Tim said.
It is anticipated that face-to-face training will be phased out during 2024 and training will be conducted exclusively online by the end of the year.
Finally, the settings on the Safety Management Online database are to be amended soon, meaning that automatic notifications will be sent out to a broader range of people who are due to complete training.
